Tape Storage
Despite the massive cost reductions and increase in options for disk storage, tape products are very much alive and well today. With the advent of fibre channel tape libraries and tape technology such as LTO3 and SDLT, tape has very much kept up with the information explosion. Much as there are advanced software products available to support ILM and other modern data management disciplines, a large number of our customer are simply addressing their increased backup needs through the use of state-of-the-art tape technology. For instance, a single LTO3 cartridge can hold up to 800 GB in compressed format, something which translates to 24 TB in a single 30-slot tape library. Likewise, by making use of 2 Gb/sec fibre channel technology, backup throughput rates well in excess of 100MB/ second can be achieved.
Perfekt supplies tape and library products from all leading vendors. These include Quantum, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and also Tandberg.
It is our view that customers should pursue ILM technologies, and that these should be combined with modern tape technologies to optimise the speed at which backups can be taken, the reduction in required backup windows and also the number of backup cycles that can be made available to users
